Alluc.org General

Alluc.org (pronounced: "all-you-see") is a link-sharing-website that catalogues links to TV shows, movies, music videos, sport, anime and cartoons to make them more easily accessible. Alluc does not host any content itself. Alluc.org also does not contain any download links, all are links to streaming video sharing websites. Users provide the links in the right category and they are released to the site after having been checked by the administrators. Video hosting sites that are linked to Alluc include YouTube, Dailymotion, Stage 6 and Veoh, amongst others. Stage6 and Veoh often offer HD quality.

Founder Sebastian Fink says: "I've experienced that the visitors use the site to test certain TV shows to check whether they want to download them or buy them on DVD. By using Alluc.org the people are getting to know shows that don't even exist in their countries."

Moreover, Alluc (and similar sites) has aided in the introduction (or plans towards this) of free streaming online video by major television networks such as HBO, FOX, BBC, Channel 4, ITV and others.] If Alluc continues to grow more popular, it could be used as a tool for networks wanting to promote their shows. These companies are increasingly making shows available for viewing on their Web sites, or for download to portable media-players like iPods, in an attempt to capture advertising revenue linked to younger segments of the market.

History

Alluc.org started out as a quest to collect all Family Guy episodes hosted on popular video hosting websites and to categorise them in one place, thus Allfg.org (standing for: All Family Guy) was founded. Set up in September 2006 by its three German owners , Allfg.org's popularity grew. On this first site the content was not yet automatically submittable. Public awareness of the site was apparently spread by word of mouth. (cfr. related articles)

On October 23rd 2006 the forum was set up, where the system of submitting links by the users was improved.

Mid November Alluc.org was launched. This site was a big improvement because the links were directly submittable to the mainsite and dead links could be reported when logged in

A logo competition was started December 29, 2006and spawned massive response from the site visitors. The logo was chosen through a democratic voting system by all visitors The finalist Tim Foster from the selection of logos that were created.

Several automated scripts were developed to aid in the detection of 'false links' and other such varieties of links that are user submitted. These scripts are activated periodically to effectively clean the database.

  Alluc Problems

In January 2007, Fox and Paramount threatened the site owners to sue them and the company that hosted their server to if they didn't take down links to their specific content. In fear of lawsuits and having their site taken down, the site owners removed the requested series and adhered to proposal not to host the mentioned items.

Because of ddos-attacks in March 2007, the owners of alluc had difficulties to keep their site running. This caused a slower surfing experience and connection problems.

Because of the system of submitting your own links, many links end up being duplicated (linked to the exact same page, not alternative links) and there can be several copies of each link. However the siteowners are currently developing programmes to combat and remove dead, and duplicated links.

Alluc Numbers

Alluc is currently ranked (concerning traffic) 1,139nd according to alexa.com and is ranked in the top 1000 of sites in Ireland (ranked 44th), United Kingdom, Denmark, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Belgium, United States, Austria, Finland, Israel, Netherlands, Australia and Germany.

The Alluc Forum System
On the forum, visitors can post new links, report dead links and give feedback (sitebugs, request features). Regular lin kposters can get a title that ranks from Link Scout to Link God. Other titles may be awarded to helpful members helping other users with technical difficulties they might experience. The forum itself plays an important part in the structure of alluc.org in that it is where the community comes together to discuss their favourites that the site offers. It has been recently upgraded with several new features and sub-forums introduced. The forum acts as a vital means for the staff of alluc.org to discuss important topics and other trivial matters.

Legal Controversy

When opening a link to a video on the site, the site generates the following message:

You are now leaving alluc.org!
By clicking on, continue to content, you will be redirected to the Episode of your choice.

Alluc claims in its disclaimer/imprint that it is not responsible for any of the content linked or referred to from its pages. All youtube / dailymotion users signed a contract with the sites when they set up their accounts which forces them not to upload illegal content.Web sites similar to alluc.org are quickly gaining momentum, all the while dodging legal flagging thanks to the number of changing hyperlinks.Alluc.org’s biggest threat are companies including the Motion Picture Association of America, which has already won anti-piracy lawsuits against users on similar sites. Prosecution can include incarceration up to five years and fines reaching $150,000 U.S. per work.

Since users are aware that they do not own the copyright to these works, the onus is on them to accept the consequences of possible jail time if caught.
